Hope Castle Gate Lodge

Hope Castle Gate lodge

Built in 1870, Hope Castle Gate lodge, a protected structure, is an extremely important building in the architectural heritage of Castleblaney, Co. Monaghan. Together with its mirror image opposite and a fine formal gateway between, it forms the entrance to the Hope Castle and the Lough Muckno Estate. Hope Castle has an extremely rich history dating from the 1780’s, and the Gate Lodge is an important link between the Castle and Castleblayney Town.

Having been uncoupled for a number of years the building had fallen into disrepair, suffering from significant vandalism and arson. Craftstudio Architecture were appointed as conservation architects for the restoration and remodelling of the building for use by Monaghan County Council. Works we completed and the building re-opened in August 2016.

The distinctive architectural qualities of the Gate Lodge, along with its sister building opposite, and the fine formal gateway between accessing Lough Muckno Estate, form an important ensemble within the town of Castleblayney.
